Antioxidant Standardization Measurements

 

The International Society of Antioxidants in Nutrition & Health (ISANH) and "La Société Française des Antioxydants" (SFA) have decided, at their 2009 annual meeting, to be the keystone of Antioxidant Standardization Measurements. Gathering many specialists on antioxidants, ISANH, SFA  and JSA started to establish measurement standards for antioxidants and oxidative stress in human.

 

Pr M.Edeas, president of ISANH highlighted "We need to credibilize the world of antioxidant and  provide high quality products to consumers. We have to standardize all antioxidant measurements at different levels:

-  before formulation (in vitro), after formulation (effects on human).

It will be a very hard task, however, we will associate all actors from academic to industrials, to joint this task force".

Starting from the widespread agreement that antioxidant measurements need to be standardized, statements must be made on the large panel of methods used to measure the antioxidant compounds, thought to impact expanding chronic diseases.

As a possible consequence of the lack of standardization: the recent release from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) expert of the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies, whom conducted studies on antioxidant contend and antioxidant properties. Providing their scientific opinion, the Panel "considers that no evidence has been provided to establish that having antioxidant activity/content and/or antioxidant properties is a beneficial physiological effect". And that a "cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of the food(s)/food constituent(s) evaluated in this opinion and the protection of body cells and molecules such as DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage" (EFSA Journal 2010; 8(2):1489).

ISANH and SFA decided that time has obviously come to reevaluate differently antioxidants and dietary supplements. Standardizing antioxidant tests could immediately produce reliable and credible data for consumers, who face misleading claims about the amount and effect of these disease-fighting compounds in their food, health and beauty products. Thanks to this system, not only consumers but industrials, physicians and clinicians (…) will be best informed.

ISANH Task Force for Antioxidant Standardization Measurements will meet next November to discuss the advances of this project.
